The Industrial Internet of Things is the industrial branch of the Internet of Things. The IIoT is one of the most important key words in business at the moment. Innovative companies have the opportunity to succeed thanks to smart solutions, new business models and more efficient service processes. Unlike the IoT, which is oriented to consumers, the IIoT focuses on applying the Internet of Things to industrial and manufacturing processes and procedures. The name includes terms like smart factories, extreme automation or industrial robots and enables a clear distinction to be drawn from the IoT environment of the end consumers. The goal is to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, accelerate processes and realise new business models. In the best-case scenario, the IIoT can positively influence companies in terms of competition, growth and future-readiness.

The IIoT can be used in many different industrial sectors. For example, this includes manufacturing companies, agriculture, energy supply, logistics companies or the medical field. Thanks to more flexible production techniques and the use of intelligent networked industrial systems, efficiency is increased. Sensors and sensor data play an important role in providing the data base for automation and self-learning machines. The core concept behind the IIoT is that smart machines work more quickly, cost-effectively, precisely and efficiently than human workers. Since large quantities of data are required to operate the IIoT and these need to be processed at high speed, big data technologies and applications play a key role.

In the industrial sector it is therefore primarily about connecting machines and systems such that the entire industrial process can be automated. This enables the efficiency of production processes to be increased and costs reduced. The Internet of Things is a fundamental component of Industry 4.0. With the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0, industrial processes can be self-managed thanks to direct communication between machines, systems, goods and workers. Therefore, instead of just individual production steps, entire value creation chains can be automated and made significantly more efficient. Machines and systems are fitted with intelligent sensors and connected, in order to plan processes in production and manufacturing more effectively and make them more time-efficient. Specifically, the Internet of Things can contribute to the optimisation of internal processes, system monitoring, predictive maintenance of machines and guaranteeing continuous production in the manufacturing industry. A major benefit of the IoT for manufacturers is saving on production time due to bottleneck detection and minimising waste. Furthermore, data collected via sensors can be used to replace or prioritise functions or reschedule tasks. The goal is to use the IIoT to be able to record and check fundamental values more easily across the entire production process.
